Nico Kazlauskas

Artist Statement

The daily processes of care and utility that go into maintaining a routine allow for mundane habits to become private, intimate, and vulnerable as one works to maintain a routine. By re-evaluating routine itself and reframing moments of domestic life, objects begin to define themselves by their significance within a space rather than solely by their function. In viewing the work, viewers are told to recognize how the desire for unachievable order and cleanliness creates Sisyphean-routines in both their own lives and the larger human experience.

Combining sculpture, installation, and filmmaking practices, Nico’s work provides an evaluation of domestic life, routine, and auteur-ship over the readymade.
