Ecce Lignum Crucis

2025

Wood, steel, shower curtain, choir robes, silkscreen, grip tape, speaker

Performed by Castle Dettinger

Ecce Lignum Crucis takes the structure of a ladder as both ascent and descent. Suspended is a silkscreen-printed shower curtain inspired by the Shroud of Turin, which depicts Christ and his crucifixion. Below, red choir robes, draped, spill onto the gallery floor, flowing from the body. Performing in the piece is Castle Dettinger, who contemplates what Dettinger describes as moments of guilt and prayer, wearing the same robes used in the sculpture. The sound environment layers a running shower, the swell of crowds, and the chant "Ecce Lignum Crucis", calling attention to the tension between public spectacle and private purification.
