Oil and Silkscreen on Canvas
Xu explores themes of labor, repetition, and exploitation within the fast fashion industry through a combination of oil painting and screen printing. By layering these techniques, the piece reflects the relentless production cycle and the harsh realities faced by garment workers. At the center of the composition, Chris Xu—CEO of Shein, one of the largest fast fashion corporations—is depicted atop a towering pile, elevated to a near god-like status within a hierarchy of labor; elevated by the human suffering dismissed by the consumer mindset of “what’s the harm in just one t-shirt?” Screen-printed images of sweatshop workers are embedded into the painting, forming a repetitive pattern that blends into the background—much like the laborers themselves, whose struggles are often obscured by the glossy facade of affordability, convenience, and the systemic erasure of those who fuel its empire.
