Wood, Acrylic tile and tub, Synthetic grass, Textiles, Baptismal candle

Heaven is portrayed as a painfully “real” field of grass and mountains in C.S. Lewis’ The Great Divorce. The characters in the story travel to the mountains and may remain there as long as they wish, but often turn back to the comforts of Greytown—Lewis’ depiction of Hell. Candle acts as an exploration and dissection of the sacrament of Baptism, the act of entering and committing to the faith. The work is divided into three parts: “The Tub and Candle”: the sacrament itself, the human portion; “The Plunge”: descending into the faith and the sculpture itself; and finally, “The Grass”: the holy, the sharp, and the essential.
